Good suggestions April, some pretty obvious and some I hadn't thought about, like rayon, considered a natural fiber. I thought that was OK. Guess if I want rayon I'll buy it at the thrift store, which is where all my rayon comes from anyway. And I had expected, before opening this, that bottled water would be #1, though sometimes when I drink up the water I have carried with me, bottled is the only thing available, and we do live in a desert.

Most are not very difficult to give up, except paper towels: sanitation and laundry (soap and water and electicity) as well as paper and manufacturing. You didn't mention choosing towels made of unbleached, recycled paper.

Better than cloth coffee filters (that are a hassle to wash) are gold filters, easy to rinse, infinitely reusable.

They also make disposable cutlery out of corn-starch. Don't ask me how. Bu they feel much like plastic ones, but heftier - for when you feel like you just gotta have the disposable (i.e. a picnic for lots of folks, or if you run a food take-out business).
