Ferns/Passage
I thank my friend De Herman for sharing her lovely poem about ferns.–April Moore
Ferns/Passage
Â
Chlorophyllic cells
Harnessing sun, rain, and soil
Gather, in community, every Spring
Form willowy fronds, unfurl,
Reveal the fresh spirited green of youth
And the wonder of Nature’s bounty
Soft and delicate in the warm breeze
Feathery ferns
Congregate beside the dirt road
Cozy up to moss and lichen
Wave at chipmunks, squirrels, deer
Catch dew drops on a summer morn
And prepare for the cool nights to come
As Summer yields to Autumn
Ferns shed their emerald frocks
And, as a last hurrah, take on new hues
Harvest gold, amber, rust
Before surrendering to first frost, then decay
Resting under the blanket of winter
Year after year
Century upon century
Spiraling through eternity
These ancient plants, bound to Earth time,
Mark their perpetual passage of the seasons
With vitality, simple beauty, and the elegance
of grace
