A Message from Mother Earth

The following piece, by Douglas Joshua Davis, appeared in the February issue of The Order of the Earth:  News, Views, and Musings About Our Planet.  I invite you to try what Mother Earth suggests here.  And I would be delighted to hear any experiences you have to report.–April Moore

Lie flat on the ground and feel what I am all about!

So many of you think you know me in an intellectual way, by reading about me or discussing me;  but, what you don’t know is how I feel.  And if you lie still on the ground you will come to know me.  There is to be no talking, no thinking, just lying and listening and hearing me–and feeling what I have to say!

Deep within me lies a secret.  Go deep within me through your heart, not your mind.  What do you feel there, what does your heart tell you?  Yes, there is life!  There is life all through me and within me.  Sacred Life!  There are Earth beings of all shapes and sizes–rock spirits and plant devas and beautiful ones who hold me together and make my life possible.

Wake up!  Wake up, humans, to the life within me and to the love I have for you despite what you do to me.  What you do to me you do to yourselves.  Wake up to who I am and honor me and celebrate me.  Life is alive!  I am alive!  I am sacred;  all life is sacred.

There are beings of life and light within the plants, the rocks, who wish to communicate with you, if you are ready.  Most of all, they desire to be recognized and respected.  Yes, they are real.  Your eyes may not see them, but your heart will.  You can do everything with your heart.

When you feel my being and touch my soul, when you listen to the message of the wind as it blows through the trees ands when you hear with your heart my pulse, you will know me.  You will then, yourself, beat with a different tone, a higher state of vibration, and you will shine with a new light.

What is the order of the Earth?  It is Balance and Love.  When all beings and systems are in balance, so am I.  When love and respect exist for me and between the humans, I am in very good order!

How beautiful! Thanks for sharing this. Once I was quite sick and out camping. The other thing I could do to feel better was to lie naked on the ground and the earth soothed me and gave me strength until I felt better. Whenever I feel sick, I lie on the ground. I’ve always done this, even as a small child—it’s been instinctual.

Thank you! The action described here with its communicaiton from the earth and vastness of the sky were profound for me as a child and young person. Now, thanks for the reminder to go out there and do it.

This morning I walked down into the forest and laid down on a grassy spot for about 20 minutes. It was indeed nourishing to feel the ground supporting me, to look up at the tall, leafy branches of the oaks, and to watch the clouds drifting eastward in the sky. I also had the company of some unseen bird making periodic chipping sounds.

I too love to lie on the ground, as in lush ferns or dry leaves. I love the smells, textures, the canopy of trees filtering the sunlight, clouds, blue sky. I love the feel of warm rocks, tree roots. Once I was in a field of Mexican gold poppies, at the base of Picacho Peak in Arizona, and they were so thick that I could not walk around them, had to place my picnic blanket right on top. And in Colorado, in high mountain meadows, the wildflowers are so colorful, so many varieties, Earth’s coat of many colors. A rainbow of Life.

April - i tried your technique but altered it a bit sitting down my back against a tree..by south river…i was comforted by the presence of wild life, a hummingbird, a butterfly, some beautiful river flowers but i started to feel very lonely at the absence of all the wildlife that must have been their 400 years ago, the herds of bison, elk and deer, the black panther strolling by for it’s unlucky lunch companion, the river otter , the beaver , the muskrat and the mink all sharing the lifeblood of the river. The more aware of their absence that i became, the more unremarkable i became in the grand scheme of existence- they’re virtually are all gone ! i’m still reflecting.

I know what you mean, Tim, about feeling the absence of the many animals who used to inhabit our forests. I sometimes think of the wolves who used to be here. And I often feel pain thinking that the number of birds is much diminished also. But on a brighter note–this summer I saw a mink by a stream that runs into the North Fork of the Shenandoah. The people who live near there said there is a family of minks who are often spotted there.
