I remember traveling from Alexandria, VA to Charlottesvile, VA as a child. I loved the train then and still do. It's always a romantic adventure for me. Recently I've realized that it is also an environmentally responsible way to travel.

We should encourage government to invest in public rail - every time they want to widen a road. I belong to railsolution.org which advocates for rail along the I-81 corridor.

Check it out.

Jim described better than I did the pleasure of riding the train and not being assaulted by billboards, strip malls, and fast food joints. How pleasant it is to see mostly farms, fields, forests, in other words--the land, not the commercial sprawl that is our usual city driving environment.

Metro Denver has begun a light rail system, with the next leg coming near our neighborhood to the west, scheduled for completion in '13. Can't wait!

The Amtrack from Denver to Chicago is a nice ride, departing in the evening (so that one travels through the flat, brown plains overnight), and dawn arrives as the train reaches the green (!) areas across Illinois. What I like about taking the train is that the track rights of way are not inundated with highway billboards, strip malls and fast food joints. One gets to see America from another viewpoint: farms, small towns, woods, etc. And the economy sleepers are just fun (good food, too in the dining cars). Then there is that wondrous, broad curve that deposits trains into Chicago's Union Station, at the very heart of the Second City, and the new Western White House (soon to be).

The tracks for the expansion of the Rainrunner Train to take us from Albuquerque to Santa Fe are in place and we look forward to being able to ride the train, hopefully next month. Everyone I talk to is excited about this.
