Amazing Photos of Icebergs
I thank Lee Stanfield (by way of Judy Muller) for these amazing pictures of icebergs. I’ve never seen such pictures before! Apparently, icebergs in the Antarctic area are sometimes striped, for the following reasons:Â
Blue stripes may be created when a crevice in the ice sheet fills with meltwater and freezes so quickly that no bubbles form.
Green stripes may form when an iceberg falls into the sea, and a layer of salty seawater, rich in algae, freezes to the underside of the iceberg.
Brown, black, and yellow strips are caused when an iceberg grinds downhill on a piece of land toward the sea, picking up sediment along the way.
     Enjoy the show!

Thanks for posting these. It got me motivated to explore iceberg and arctic photos further. There are some amazing nature and environmental photographers out there!

How can a human artist be anything but awed and shamed by these beautiful works of nature that would have melted into obscurity if not for these wonderful photos. More Please!

Debbie’s comment has got me thinking. How important photography is to both our love of our planet and to our efforts to save it. I am thinking of the BBC series, now out on DVD, called ‘Planet Earth.’ This incredible series takes nature photography to a level I have never experienced. Thanks to advances in technology, this series shows us bird of paradise courtship rituals, hungry lions killing an elephant at night, and much, much more that I, for one, had never been able to witness before.
