Nothing will change as long as people continue to support the corporate party (GOP and Dems). We need a third party; a people's party that will dismantle the plutocracy that is strangling our democratic republic. Once all of the masses wake up, maybe then change can come. Until then, the plutocrats will continue to use force (police and National Guard) to oppress dissenters-. Market Economy

I do a bi-weekly green tip segment for my local cable company and I came upon a website for recycling electronics about a month ago. The website is www.recycleitamerica.com. They'll send you the shipping labels and packages you need and it's no cost to you. You might even get paid for your equipment if there is value! Happy recycling!

I appreciate your thoughtful comments, Liz. I know I have experienced difficulty in recycling old computer equipment. I've given stuff to local charities who say they can use such equipment, but I'm never sure what they might do with any equipment they end up being unable to use.

Do you know if there is any national organization or recycling center where visitors to TheEarthConnection can find out how to recycle computer equipment? And do you happen to know which computer manufacturers are stepping forward to address the problem of toxic materials and computer waste? --April

Thanks for adding your valuable insights here!

Thank you for this inspiring web site April, including these sensible tips for greener computer use. An additional part of greener computer use is to be thoughtful about updating and replacing your computer (is it really necessary?) and to recycle it with an environmentally responsible company. Computers and some peripherals contain heavy metals and other toxic materials and should not be disposed of in the garbage. However it isn't always easy to recycle computers with confidence that they won't end up in a third world country. Fortunately a number of states, including Washington, are establishing requirements that establish responsibility on the part of the computer manufacturers...and some of the more progressive companies are stepping forward. I am not an expert in this area but I can provide some additional information if you want me to.
